45 minute inquiry - Logs

The logs came from mostly asia then from coastal new zealand. They are pine trees the latin name is pinus. A total of 8,545 come from asia. Logs are transported to Mount Maunganui by boat in crates and trains.

Then they get the logs they clean and cut them into paper. Some of the logs they send to othet ports like auckland or they send them back to where they come from.

The life cycale of the log is. First it grows from a sapling. Then it becomes a adult pine tree. It starts growing pine trees and dropping them. Then when someone wants a section to be cleared the forestry people come and chop the trees down. Then log trucks come and pick up the logs and take them to a port or train station. Then they are put on a train and sent to the port of Tauranga.

Koi Caro Bow Fishing

Last Saturday Mrs Mills went to Huntly to bow hunt for koi carp. She was hunting them because they are a pest. They eat native fish and their eggs. They pollute the water by stirring up the mud and it kills native trees. Koi carp can grow up to 80cm and can weigh up to 10kg.

Mrs Mills went bow hunting last weekend because the koi carp were spawning (breeding) and they come into the shallows to do this.

Bow hunting is a sport that requires a bow and arrow. You also need a line attached to the arrow so you can retrieve the fish and arrow. You do not need a license in NZ to bow hunt. It has been around since the Victorian era.

Mrs Mills caught 6 koi carp. She didn’t throw them back into the water because you can receive a fine.  She left them on the side of the lake and they were taken by some fishermen.

Tennis

Today for P.E we did tennis and we had a doubles tournament. I was with jesse and we won one game and lost two. It was fun hitting the ball back and forth. It was hard serving from the back. What I did wrong was not moving into the ball when hitting it. I improved on my forearm hitting it back. However got 3 points first won the game and whoever won the most games in a row won overall.
Here are some pictures of it

Beyond The Story

Click! Click! I lock my car ready for another boring day at work and catch the elevator up to floor 95. I email my clients and then. I hear this roar of a jumbo jet. I hear a huge smashing coming towards me. I see the nose of a huge plane charging at me. Everyone is screaming. I fall through the floor and land on the floor below. The room is starting to catch fire so I decide to go to the stairs but the door is locked. I punch it open with my bare fists. I race down the stairwell and find a gaping hole in the floor. I jump as far as I can and grab onto the floor. I just make it and struggle up to my feet.

I look out the window and see a another plane accelerating towards the South Tower. SMASH! Some debris breaks through the window and just misses my head. I keep running down the stairs to find a raging fire burning at the floor beneath me. I see a couple of burnt bodies on the ground and don’t know what to do. This is really bad! Smoke on top of me; fire beneath me. What should I do? I decide to just wait there. I slowly fall asleep.

I awaken to the crackling of fire. Ohh! I decide to climb out of the building and cling on to the window for my life. I climb down and look at all the destruction below me. Hmm... I need to get down safely. I look above me and see dozens of people jumping off the building, one almost knocks me down. I guess I would rather jump and die instantly then get burnt or die of suffocation. I continue climbing down the building carefully. Then I hear a firefighter yelling through a speaker saying, “Be careful don’t fall.”

“Ok!!” I yell back.  I'm not giving up yet but my feet start slipping and I FALL!!! I grab onto the ledge of the window. That was a close one. Another wave of jumpers come by, this time none came close. I'm about halfway down now and I can see lots of black dots on the ground. Some aren't moving; I guess they are dead. My feet are getting really tired now and I'm starting to think about jumping. Just as I think that I see a jumper land on a firefighter and they both die.

I break through the window I am clinging onto and jump in and see live people panicking. They are screaming. I should be too.  Some of them jump! I look at the door to the stairwell and its locked. I smash it open to find another roaring fire beneath me. I’m not going that way for sure. Now theres only one choice. I fly like I've never flown before. The wind makes me feel the best I’ve felt in years. This is the end.

Waimarino

I think other schools should go to waimarino because its really nice on a hot day. Its also lots of fun because you can fight people on the gladiator pole and kayak around. You can also jump of the high dive or low dive, do the blob, Jump high into the water on the U.F.O.

I learnt how to kayak and raft up. Also a new game called seal and shark where the sharks try and tag the seals and the last seal left wins.

Key Competencies:
I learnt how to manage myself by keeping all my stuff in my bag so I didn't lose it.

I related to others by waiting in line for the high diving board and not pushing in.

I was thinking by waiting until the person had swum away below me before I jumped.

I was using signs symbols and text by reading instruction signs on the slip N slide.

I was participating and contributing by doing all the activities accept the U.F.O because we ran out of time.

Life Ed - Addiction

In Life Ed we have been learning about addiction.

Addiction is when a person needs to take a drug to feel normal.

These are things you lose when you take a drug
M= Memory
R= Reason

J= Judgement
M= Mechanical Skills

I= Intellect
C= Concentrate
E= Emotions

This is what happens when you take a drug and get addicted. When a person takes 1 and then another you get addicted and need to take it to feel normal. When it goes up its when a person just took a dose.
0+ is High
0- is Low
0 is normal

When It gets to 0 again its when they think it stopped working, then take something else stronger.

Why Bees Swarm

Bees swarm because the queen leaves the hive with 60% of the worker bees to make a new hive.
Today I was playing handball at lunch and then we heard some girls screaming. Then we turned around and saw a bee tornado, It started moving towards us so we left. Then they went onto a rose bush and created a big swarm on the bush and a hive.

SPCA Presentation

Today in Block two Norm Hewitt came in for the spca to give us a presentation called one of the family. He talked about how his family were treated by his dad and said that if you treat animas nicely you will treat your family nicely to. He was a hooker in the all blacks. He grew up  in a family of seven and his dad once strapped him so hard that he got knocked out and his fsce was swollen for months. He  swore that when he had a family to treat them really nicely.

Dangerous decibels

Today we had a session on dangerous decibels. We learnt how noises can affect our ears. 1 fact I found out was that frogs can grow the hairs in their ears back. I learnt that if you go right next to fireworks when they go off you can go deaf. One thing I will change is to have my ipod down when I listen to music. We also used these metal things to find out how vibrations create energy.

Rugby

Last weekend I played my rugby match against Te puna. They are one of the toughest teams in the competition so it was a hard game. at half time we were down 33-0. But in the second half we scored more points than them. in the end the score was 45-14.

Book Response Scorpio Sting

My book is: Scorpion Sting
The Author is: Justin Daa’th

The story took place in the australian desert. This was important to the story because the desert is a good scene for the book. You could really imagine you were there when nathan fell in the cave. I disliked the army when they were training, for firing fire missiles at sam and the camel boy. The character of the army changed by the end of the story when they saved them from getting shot. An important decision made by the main character was to tackle the prime minister to save his life. This book made me think about what the army really do. From reading the book I learned that the army, air force and the navy come together to do missions. The title of the story was important because the scorpions tried to sting sam. A tense moment was when the prime minister got up and was ok. The ending stays in your mind because nathan get saved and gets to hospital ok.

Book Response Anaconda Ambush

My book is: Anaconda ambush
The Author is: Justin D’aath

The story took place in the amazon jungle, this was important to the story because some of the creatures that live in the amazon are the problem.You could really imagine you were there when the giant anaconda jumped at him. I disliked the two deutch hunters when they kept  his friend as hostage and when they were trying to shoot sam For trying to get away. An important decision made by the main character was to run away from the hunters and find his uncle. This book made me think about the choice he had made because it was risky and he could have got killed. From reading the book I learned that you shouldn’t listen to people if they sound like they're faking their identity.The title of the story was important because it made you visualise what the book was about. A tense moment was when the puma was standing on him. The ending stays in your mind because he goes home after all hes been through. I'd like to read other stories by this author because he makes them really interesting. I think this is a good book for readers who like action and adventure, because theres lots of it in this book.

Book Response The busker

My book is: The busker (unbelievable)
The Author is: Paul jennings

The story took place at the beach This was important to the story because this is where the old man told him the story about the busker. You could really imagine you were there then there were people lined up to get free money. I felt sympathy for the busker when he ran out of money and then the people destroyed his house and left him stuck in the well.

The character of the busker changed by the end of the story by when he ran out of money he turned sad again.
An important decision made by the main character was to give away free money to make people like him.
From reading the book I learned to not treat someone/something how you wouldn’t want to be treated.
The title of the story was important because it make me think of what a busker was and got me starting to think.
A sad part of the book was when he left his dog stuck in the well and made its neck stay staring up.
The ending stays in your mind because the dog treats him how he treated the dog and he learned his lesson.
I'd like to read other stories by this author because he makes the stories have important messages in them.

A most triumphant tale (homework challenge)

This production was presented from students at Tauranga intermediate school. It was about two rival bands trying to beat each other in the band battle. The bands were One Dimension who were the favorites and the lip sinkers, and there were labyrinth who were trying to stop the lip sinkers win and change music history. They were greeted by Starman who came from 2023 to tell them to stop the lip sinkers re writing music history (to save the future from lip sinkers). Then labyrinths lead singer quit so she could trial for the voice, then the keyboard player and one of the electric guitarist quit too. So then the band was left with only the drummer and Guitarist. They traveled through time trying to find band members. In the end they got Jimi Hendrix and Mozart. Then they won the band battle and there band members came back. Then at the end One Dimension and Labyrinth played a song together at the end. Some of the funny parts were when teachers made quest appearances in different parts of the sho. My favorite part of the production was when labyrinth in the band battle. Heres a picture of me in the audience.
I enjoyed this show and I would give it a 5 star rating.

Cross country

Today was the school cross country.
Last year in cross country I got 155th and this year I got 137th so I have improved 18 places. I was really tired at the finish and I couldn't breathe properly. First of all we had a warm up and stretches. Then Mr carlin called us all to the start line. Next Mr Potaka fired the gun and we were of. For the first lap I was doing pretty well, but then on the second I started to get really tired. But I still never started walking. Then in the final final straight I started sprinting and I passed lots of people. I think that I did well in this years cross country and I hope that Rimu will win the overall points.

Volcanic panic

Kye: Volcanic panic
I was hopping off the plane carrying my luggage in my hand. I had just arrived in italy. I started walking out of the terminal when I heard this big explosion. Then I heard the loud speaker say “ Everyone get under something and protect your head”. I get under the mcdonalds ordering desk (with three others). Then there this big sizzle, “what’s going on” I say in confusion. Then there’s a BANG BANG BANG, and huge rocks come smashing through the roof I see blood everywhere but I stay under the desk. Then I see the most gruesome thing ever, a man gets up because he thinks its stopped but then a massive 5 metre rock hits him head first (his head comes off). Everyone wants to help him but no one does because they don’t want the same to happen to them. 5 minutes later we are still sitting there waiting for it to end, when this 1 metre rock lands right on top of the desk it scrapes my arm and I start bleeding (but at least im alive). Then It stops but I dont move until a volcanologist comes us and tells us that it has stopped. I then flew back to New Zealand and went home. I now live to tell the tale.

Cemetery Investigation

Today I went to the Anglican cemetery. I found out that there was someone who died in 1896. I also found out that someone died when they were 102. It was quite interesting looking at the gravestones because there were some flash ones and old ones covered in moss. Before we could leave we needed to wash our hands with water. Overall it was very fascinating experience.

Here is a photo of the cemetery

Camp happenings

Camp Happenings

The funniest happening on camp was when Jessica shot Max in the ear and that ended up being the answer to the clash of camps question.

The biggest challenge on camp to get up the centipede ladder because it kept moving around when you tried to climb up.

The scariest happening on camp was when Felila tried to do a backflip at night and landed on her head and needed to go to hospital.

The most exhausting moment was when I needed to run the tube back in the clash of the camps.

The most embarrassing moment was when I slid over running down the hill from paintball while mr hart was shooting at me.

The most dangerous moment was when I hit my head at the end of the flying fox.

I learnt that there are lots of different types of trees and ferns at ngamuwahine. I also learnt that you can find lots of little worms in moss.
I also found out that there are little creatures that live in the river and indicate if the river is safe.

I was surprised when lachy and dylan shot a possu when they went hunting. I was also surprised when the rabbit run was so small.

1 question I still have is are there pigs that live in the bush?

Camp Food Survey Results

The most popular breakfast food was toast an d spaghetti I think it was that because you could have that
for every breakfast, also the most liked lunch was american hotdogs. The most popular dinner was hamburgers with 23 votes. the top three mos liked foods were, 1 toast and spaghetti 25, 2 hamburgers 23, 3 american hot dogs 21. Undone (Batty) Book Response

My book is: Undone (Batty)
The Author is: Paul Jennings
I chose this book because: I'm reading the Paul jennings series

The story took place in a camping trip in the mountains this is important to the story because this is where everything takes place there. I disliked the dad when he was spying on the girl when she was trying to help the boy in the bush. An important decision was made by the main character when she decided to go to the batcave to go save the bats and the boy. From reading the book I learned that if you are nice to someone they are usually nice back. The title of the story was important because as soon as I looked at I knew that it was about bats. A happy part of the story was when the bats took her and the boy back to the camp. The ending stays in your mind because Of how happy it was.

Unseen (squawk talk) book response

My book is: unseen (squawk talk)
The Author is: Paul Jennings
I chose this book because: It is a book I have been reading at home.

This story takes place in a town in england on a train this is important to the story because the train is where the problem happens. I disliked the parrot because it followed the boy everywhere he went. The character of the story changed from the start of the story to the end because he went from bad to good. This book made me think about not saying mean words to people. The title of the story was important because it made me think about what squawk and talk means. an interesting part of the story was when he got a toilet seat stuck around his neck. I’d like to read other stories by this author because he makes them interesting and funny.
